A carbon oxidn. column (56) has stages (178, 180) connected to form a vertical column and a central opening which receives a UV lamp. At least one stage has a residence chamber and a reaction chamber with helical grooves (174) formed by lands and recesses, the inner dia. of the lands being the same as the outer dia. of the lamp so as to form helical passageways (174) around the lamp and permit rapid movement of liq. adjacent to the lamp.
