A process for the preparation of 2-methyl-1,3-thiazol-4-yl)-ethynyl substituted epothilones of formula (9) and intermediates thereof is disclosed. Further, a process for a degradation of an epothilone C or an epothilone D, wherein an epothilone C or epothilone D is subjected to an olefin metathesis in the presence of ethylene and subsequently an optional ester hydrolysis is also described.
