PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem of welding quality deterioration due to wrong detection in cases where for example, a welding cable is elongated between a welding power source and a welding torch or a base metal, in connection with a method for discriminating short circuit of AC pulsed arc welding, wherein a consumable electrode and a base metal are discriminated as in a state of short circuit when the output voltage of the welding power source is not higher than a prescribed reference value Vt, in a consumable electrode type AC pulsed arc welding in which welding is performed by supplying a peak current and a base current during the positive polarity period of the electrode and by supplying an electrode negative current during the negative polarity period Ten of the electrode. SOLUTION: This method for discriminating short circuit of AC pulsed arc welding is designed to set the reference value Vt at a larger value Vtp only in the energizing period Tp of the peak current than in other periods Ten, Tb.
