Effective removal of cytokines in acute patients is performed by first subjecting the blood for purification to ultrafiltration or plasmafiltration; subsequently feeding the ultrafiltrate or plasmafiltrate through an adsorption column wherein the adsorbent material is uncoated activated carbon and/or hydrophobic or ion-exchange polystyrene resins, such as AMBERLITE TM , AMBERCHROM TM , AMBERSORB TM , commonly used in the food industry; and then adding the purified ultrafiltrate or plasmafiltrate to the eluate recovered downstream from the ultrafilter or plasmafilter; preferably, the ultrafiltrate or plasmafiltrate is subjected to a double adsorption step, first through a column of activated carbon, and then through a column packed with hydrophobic or ion-exchange resin. <IMAGE> |
