PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save an ultraviolet energy or to shorten a time required for image formation by applying the ultraviolet energy by an optimum method according to an image density so as to fix a yellow (Y) layer and a magenta (M) layer. SOLUTION: In a printer 1 which forms a color image on a color thermal recording paper 2, the maximum density and the minimum density in a Y image and an M image are calculated with reference to image data, and the ultraviolet energy necessary for anteriorly fixing the Y layer and M layer is calculated by subtracting the maximum density from a density when the Y layer and M layer are perfectly colored. At the same time, the ultraviolet energy necessary for substantially posteriorly fixing the Y layer and M layer is calculated by subtracting the maximum density and the minimum density from a density when the Y layer and M layer are perfectly colored. The Y layer and M layer are anteriorly fixed by turning on an ultraviolet lamp beforehand. After the Y image is formed, the Y layer is posteriorly fixed by irradiating ultraviolet rays.
