PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide initialization responding to application without confusing a user when creating a plurality of partitions on a recording medium, and providing a plurality of types of formats in a mixed state. SOLUTION: In an initialization process, a recording capacity of a recording medium is acquired, and a difficulty level of a menu selected from "normal" and "extension" and set by the user is determined. If it is determined to be "normal", it is determined whether or not the recording capacity of the recording medium is within a recording capacity which can be managed by a format having compatibility with an existing digital camera such as FAT12 or FAT16, and if it is within the recording capacity which can be managed by, for example, FAT16, only an option for initializing the whole by FAT16 is created. If it exceeds the recording capacity which can be managed by a format having compatibility with an existing digital camera, an option or the like for initializing the whole by an extended format such as FAT32 is created.
