PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for industrially advantageously producing an internal olefin with a high isomeric conversion ratio, by selectively conducting internal isomerization of anα-olefin by the use of catalysts given at a low cost, while preventing side reactions, such as skeletal isomerization, oligomerization, and cracking. SOLUTION: This method for producing the internal olefin comprises bringing theα-olefin into contact with a zeolite catalyst and/or a montmorillonite-based catalyst, so as to isomerize the olefin, wherein theα-olefin comprises a 12-20C olefin which has a concentration of oxygen derived from an oxo compound of≤20 mass ppm.
