PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a press forming method and press forming apparatus capable of stabilizing the dimensional accuracy of a press formed article obtainable even when a material characteristic value such as tensile strength varies. SOLUTION: In the press forming method of press forming a material to be formed by a forming die 5, the amount of spring back of the press formed article W 1 obtained by regulating the forming speed of the press forming machine obtained with respect to the material to be formed based on the difference from the material characteristic value of the material to be formed which is a reference within the management width of the material characteristic value of the material to be formed which is going to be worked is regulated. Namely, the forming speed is regulated in the direction where the amount of spring back of the press formed article W 1 obtained with the material to be formed which is going to be worked is equaled to the amount of spring back of the press formed article W 1 in the material to be formed of the material characteristic value which is the reference.
