PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a driver to switch to an intended gear stage by less number of manual gear shift operation procedures when switching from automatic gear shift mode to manual gear shift mode. SOLUTION: In the manual gear shift mode, a shift range in the manual gear shift mode is set in accordance with vehicle speed V in the automatic gear shift mode when switching from the automatic gear shift mode to the manual gear shift mode for the automatic transmission of range hold type and five speed gear shift type for performing automatic gear shift control in a shift range using a gear stage as an upper limit gear stage. When vehicle speed V is low speed less than a first vehicle speed determining value SPDCHK1, 3 ranges are set. When vehicle speed V is middle speed above the first vehicle speed determining value SPDCHK1 and less than a second vehicle speed determining value SPDCHK2, 4 ranges are set.
