A catalyst for the hydrogenation treatment of a hydrocarbon oil which has an inorganic porous carrier composed at least of oxides of aluminum, phosphorus and silicon and, carried thereon, as an active metal, at least one 8 Group metal of the Periodic Table, at least one 6 Group metal of the Periodic Table and phosphorus, characterized in that the chemical shift value of phosphorus in <31>P-CPMAS-NMR of the inorganic porous carrier has a peak in the range of 0 to -20 ppm. The above catalyst allows the achievement of the hydrogenation treatment of a hydrocarbon oil which reaches such an extremely high level that a residual sulfur content is 10 mass ppm or less and a residual nitrogen content is 3 mass ppm or less.
