514,653. Photo-electric apparatus. BRITISH ELECTRICON (LONDON), Ltd., ROBINSON, W. A., and CHAMBERS, W. A. May 12, 1938, No. 14202. [Class 40 (iii)] A system for the detection of suspended matter in fluids, such as smoke in air, comprises a lens system 8 for projecting a latent image of a lamp 9 in a chamber 1 containing the fluid, and a spherical mirror 14 having its focus at the latent image for throwing light therefrom on to a photo-electric cell 15, conveniently through another lens system. When suspended matter is present, the latent image becomes luminous and the cell is activated. This system may be used in the apparatus described in Specification 502,971, in which several streams of fluid are' sequentially examined. This is shown in Fig. 3. In this arrangement, light from reflectors 14 passes through windows 31, and a mirror 26, rotating about a vertical axis with a window 27 and a lens 28 throws the light from the reflectors 14 one after another on the cell 15. The fluid is admitted to the chambers 1 by lateral inlets 2 and pass out by outlets 3. The spherical reflector may be a " Mangin " reflector silvered on its outer face and having its front and rear faces of different radii of curvature to compensate for refraction. Specification 272,914, [Class 40 (iii)], also is referred to. |
