PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric power steering system enabling a user to automatically detect faults of a resolver. SOLUTION: An electric power steering system in which a stub shaft 3 and a pinion 4 provided in a casing a are connected with each other using a torsion bar spring 5, electrically detects steering torque from a relative rotation angle of the stub shaft 3 and the pinion 4, and controls output of a motor according to the detected steering torque. A resolver R to detect the relative rotation angle of the stub shaft 3 and the pinion 4 is provided in the casing a. A fault detecting means 18 connected to the resolver R detects sin and cos signals from the resolver R, calculates vector A=sin<SP>2</SP>θ+cos<SP>2</SP>θusing the detected signals to monitor whether the vector A is within the predetermined normal range. The device also comprises a function to determine a fault of the resolver R when the vector A is out of the normal range. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
