The light emitting device (16) comprises a rectangular LED (light emitting element) (25) having a light emitting unit (23) for emitting a lighting light, a substrate (26) for fixing the LED (25), a spacer (27) having a mirror surface (27A) for reflecting a lighting light emitted from the LED (25), and a tapered rod (columnar light guide unit) (28) having a device-side incident end face (incident end face) (28A) which a lighting light enters, a tapered rod-side surface (28B) as a total reflection surface for totally reflecting a lighting light incident from the device-side incident end face (28A), and device-side exit end face (exit end face) (28C) having an area larger than that of the device-side incident end face (28A) and emitting a lighting light totally reflected off the tapered rod-side surface (28B).
