It is possible to accurately judge whether the laser radiation position on an optical disc is located in an identification area (BCA) where the identifier is recorded and effectively identify the area position of the identifier. The optical disc drive comprises an optical pickup for creating a quantity-of-light signal by detecting the reflection light from an optical disc, and a detecting section for outputting a detection signal corresponding to the variation in signal level of the quantity-of-light signal wherein the detection signal indicates that the variation has lasted for a first predetermined time or longer. The optical disc drive comprises a pulse signal output section for outputting a pulse signal lasting for a second predetermined time or longer each time when the detection signal is outputted, and an area judging section for judging whether the light radiation position is the identification area according to the duration of the pulse signal.
