PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder capable of realizing effective complementary recording by carrying out correction considering a recording condition by a recording element in the vicinity of a defective recording element or a deviation of a recording position of a recording element to be used for the complementary recording, and a method of recording. SOLUTION: A defective recording element of an inkjet recording head is detected on the basis of an image acquired by reading a recorded predetermined test pattern by means of a scanner. The recording of the predetermined test pattern including complementary recording is performed by applying a predetermined identical color complement and a predetermined different color complement to the defective recording element on the basis of the detected result, and the extent of the complementary recording in relation to the image acquired by reading the test pattern again by means of the scanner is estimated. A parameter to be used for the identical color complement and the different color complement is corrected on the basis of the estimated result. The processing for the complementary recording is applied to input recording data by using the corrected parameter, thereby performing the recording by using the inkjet recording head.
