PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-liquid separator that enhances a washing effect maximally utilizing the rising stream and is capable of controlling the air quantity from a diffuser, and to provide an operating method thereof. SOLUTION: The solid-liquid separator is characterized by forming a plurality of chambers 25, 26 which open through openings 25a, 26a of the upper end and openings 25b, 26b of the lower end, the upper circulation passage 27 which rings a plurality of the chambers communicating through each opening of the upper end of each chamber and the lower circulation passage 28 which rings a plurality of chambers communicating through each opening of the lower end within the casing 22, installing the outer circulation passage 20 outside the casing 22 communicating with the upper circulation passage 27 and the lower circulation passage 28, charging each chamber with a plurality of membrane cartridges 29 and arranging a diffusing tubes 31, 32 at the lower part of the membrane cartridge of each chamber. The operating method using the separator comprises conducting intermittently the circulation stream-filtration step to supply air only to one diffusing tube 31 and the whole diffusing step to supply air to both the diffusing tubes 31, 32 by motor operated valves 36, 37 equipped with each the diffusing tube.
