A backlight device and a liquid crystal display device are provided with a light source (21), which is arranged at a position facing a light projecting plane (20a) in a case (23) having the light projecting plane (20a) opened so as to project light to the light projecting plane (20a); a transmitting reflecting plate (25), which is arranged in the case (23) to form a space including the light source (21) and transmits a part of the entered light and reflects a part of the rest; and a transmitting diffusing plate (41), which is arranged on the light projecting plane (20a) of the case (23) to diffuse the light transmitted through the transmitting reflecting plate (25) for plane emission. The case (23) is provided with a reflecting plane (24) on an inner plane of the case (23) to reflect the entered light. In the space formed in the case (23) by the transmitting reflecting plate (25), a part of the light projected from the light source (21) is internally reflected by the transmitting reflecting plate (25) and the reflecting plane (24), and then transmitted through the transmitting reflecting plate (25).
