PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform the archiving, backup, and reading of data for clustered applications supported by a network in a clustered network environment. SOLUTION: An archiving server application using a virtual client application determines the physical location of a clustered application prior to an actual backup procedure, and the physical location of the clustered application is processed to access a set of backup configuration files stored by the virtual client application. The backup configuration files contain information related to a manner in which the clustered application should be archived and/or restored. In this manner, the data archiving system can perform the archiving of clustered applications without having to monitor the network for the failover operation of the clustered applications.
