PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the generation of noise at lighting of a luminescent panel device and to reduce a load to environment when the luminescent panel device is discarded. SOLUTION: A vacuum fluorescent tube 1 is used as the lighting source of the luminescent panel device. The vacuum fluorescent tube 1 comprises a glass substrate 11, a cross-sectional U-shaped cover 12 constituting a vacuum envelope 10 with the glass substrate 11, filament supporting members 16a, 16b fixed on the glass substrate 11, a filament 17 fixed to filament supporting members 16a, 16b, an anode 19 formed on the cover 12, and a phosphor layer 20 formed on the surface of the anode 19. This vacuum fluorescent tube 1 is arranged so as to face the glass substrate 11 to the incident surface of a light guiding plate. A high frequency voltage is not needed for lighting of the vacuum fluorescent tube 1. Encapsulating a toxic substance such as mercury into the vacuum envelope 10 is not needed.
