PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a medium having high coercive force, low noise, and a small thermal fluctuation influence, and to provide a magnetic storage device having a recording density of 3 Gbits or higher per square inch. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium, orientation control films (31, 31') in an L10-type crystal structure, an L21-type crystal structure, an f.c.c.-type crystal structure, or a B2 (CsCl) crystal structure containing B are formed on a substrate, and Co alloy magnetic films (34, 34') are formed on the orientation control films directly or via underlayer films (32, 32', 33, 33') made of Cr or a Cr alloy. With this structure, a medium having high coercive force, low noise, and small thermal fluctuation influence can be achieved. The magnetic storage device having a recording density of 3 Gbits or higher per square inch can be obtained by combining the magnetic recording medium with a magnetic head having an element specialized for reproduction utilizing magnetoresistance effect.
