<p>Production of highly pure silica comprises introducing sand into a plasma-filled reactor via a tube (24) into which nitrogen is supplied, the reaction products being silicon and water. Aluminum or magnesium scrap metal is preferably introduced into the reactor (2,3) via tube (24) and the amount of nitrogen introduced is varied according to the desired reaction product. A fuel is preferably introduced from one side of the reactor (8) and the reaction products are continuously removed from the other side of the reactor, preferably using a radially turbine displacement device (10). The reactor wall is preferably cooled by a coolant liquid using inlet (6) and outlet (7). INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for an apparatus for producing e.g. pure silicon oxides including two toothed, intermeshed rotationally opposed crushing wheels (10).</p> |
