The invention relates to a device and method for the optimal estimation of distortion of a transmission medium, comprising the sequential emission of pairs of quadrature complementary sequences. The inventive method consists in generating a transmission preamble which uses complementary sequences and which, upon reception, enables identification of the distortion produced in each of the I/Q phases of a quadrature modulation system on the symbols transmitted, thereby cancelling the phase distortion effects produced by the medium and reducing equalisation of the channel to a single baseband filter which is identical for both phases I2/Q2. Upon reception, the time and/or frequency characteristics of the distortion produced by the medium are extracted with a precision that is dependent on the length of the sequences used during encoding.
