Dark field illumination device has an optical sensor (2) and light emitting diodes (8, 9) e.g. white light emitting diodes, which serve as light sources, where the diodes include light emitting openings aligned on a common focal point. The diodes are mounted on a suitable support and arranged below an object level. Each diode has a luminance distribution centered about an optical axis (4), where the diodes are connected with a control device.
