The device has a protection module (20) with a mechanical actuator (32) having a mechanical control connection (33) set in a trip state representing a defect of a varistor and a sparker when a thermal pin (30) and a fuse (31) cause an electrical separation of the varistor and sparker. The actuator is coupled to switchgear (21) through the connection to actuate opening/tripping of the switchgear when the connection is in the trip state.
