The cutting unit (1) is designed as a carrying arm (3) rotating around a vertical axle (19) and guided transversally across the lawn. Two rotating cutting devices (13, 15) are attached to a first linear extension (7) close to the vehicle and a single device (17) is joined to a second extension (9) at the outer end of the arm (3). When the unit (1) approaches a traffic guiding post (6) the arm (3) is swiveled anti-clockwise around the obstacle (6) while simultaneously cutting the grass surrounding it. The post (6) is accommodated in a semi-circular recess (10) for the duration of the process.
