The method includes the operation of discriminating (S310) a type of an optical disc loaded in an optical player (100), and if the optical disc is discriminated (S310) as one of a plurality of optical discs that belong to a first type, setting (S320) the play mode of the optical player to a play mode corresponding to the type of the discriminated optical disc, reading and playing data recorded in the loaded optical disc, and if the optical player is unable to reproduce the data recorded in the optical disc, then changing (S360) the play mode of the optical player to a play mode for reproducing one of a plurality of optical discs that belong to a second type.
