In soft handover, a mobile user entity 1 is in simultaneous communication with a number of cell base stations 2-4, e.g. via an uplink-dedicated physical channel 9, for normal use. Uplink power level is usually set by reducing power if any active cell requests power down. This is communicated by Transmit Power Control (TCP) signals on a downlink DPCH 5-7 from each cell. If the UE is also using high speed down link packet access (HSDPA), it will be communicating to only the serving cell C 2, e.g. via HS-DPCCH 8 and HS-DSCH 10. In the handover condition, cell A or cell B could be a better link than cell C and could be requesting power down. In the prior art this would also reduce the HSDPA uplink power level, resulting in the likelihood of acknowledgements of correctly received packets not being received by the cell C, leading to unnecessary resending of packets. The invention solves this problem by dividing the control, such that the control signals for the normal traffic sent from all the cells via DLPCH 5-7 control only the corresponding uplink power level on UL-DPCH 9 and separate control of the HSDPA on HSDCCCH is carried out according to signals received from cell C on DL-DPCH. |
