X, XI, X 2O, N, S, P or CR 1R 2; either R 1, R 2H, halo, 3-18C alkyl, alkenyl, carboxylic radical, hydroxycarbonylalkyl, hydrogenocarbonyl, hydrogenocarbonylalkyl, alkylcarboxyalkyloxy, cyano, thiocyano, nitro, nitroso, OH, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, aryloxy, amino, alkylamino, dialkylamino, arylalkylamino, diarylamino, alkenylamino, thio, alkylthio, arylthio, alkenylthio, aryl, heteroaryl, or quaternary ammonium; or R 1, R 2form a cycle or a heterocycle (when condensed with A, A 1or A2); A, A 1, A 26-50C mono or polyaromatic radical (optionally condensed) (containing heteroatoms (N, S, O and/or P)); and L : simple bond or an aliphatic or aromatic divalent radical, which contain one or more heteroatoms (O, S, N) and condense with A 1or A 2. Provided (A) is not 1,2-indanedione or acenaphthylenequinone. INDEPENDENT CALIMS are also included for: (1) multi-component coloring agent comprising composition (a) containing (A) as a first component, and composition (b) comprising at least an activator which modifies the kinetic of the reaction of derivative 1,3- indanedione, as a second component; (2) process of coloring comprising application of (a) and (b) on a keratinous matter; and (3) process of coloring comprising application of (I) on a keratinous matter to obtain the desired color.
