PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve gear capable of stabilizing the rotation of an engine by suppressing the vibration of a control shaft in controlling the lift of a small valve when the engine is started to prevent the lift from dispersing among cylinders. SOLUTION: A variable mechanism 9 controls the lift amount of an intake valve according to the operating state of an engine by relatively supplying and discharging a hydraulic pressure to the first and second operating chambers 30 and 31 of the hydraulic drive mechanism 23 of a hydraulic actuator 21 to rotate a vane member 32 in normal and reverse directions so as to rotate a control shaft 19 in normal and reverse directions. At the start of the engine, the engagement member 36 of an constraining mechanism 33 is engaged with an engagement hole 37 beforehand to constrain the free rotation of the vane member and, after the start, the engagement of the engagement member is released by a release mechanism 34 to release the constraint of the vane member.
