<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure fixing, etc. on any of various kinds of recording materials under optimum fixing conditions while improving usability, by discriminating the types of the recording materials. <P>SOLUTION: In the case where paper types are similar, a fixed first or second value as a threshold may make it difficult to discriminate the paper types. Here, a threshold y is obtained by assigning the second value to x of threshold calculation formula (1): y=-04x+35. When the first value is greater than the calculation result y, a paper type a is discriminated. When it is not greater than the threshold y, a paper type b is discriminated. This makes it possible to obtain reliable result of identification compared to the result depending on the fixed thresholds.
