PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a running stability and a running durability in a high density recording type magnetic recording medium having an extremely thin magnetic layer. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing the magnetic recording medium 10 having the magnetic layer 2 with the film thickness of≤100nm and a protective layer 3 formed on the magnetic layer 2 by a plasma CVD method, when a Raman spectrometry by means of an argon ion laser stimulation of wavelength 514.5nm is carried out for the protective layer 3, an intensity ratio A/B of a peak intensity area A in 1000cm<SP>-1</SP>-1800cm<SP>-1</SP>and a background intensity area B is settled as≤0.25, and an ion irradiation process is carried out on the magnetic layer 2 as a pre-processing of a film formation process of the protective layer 3.
