A system and method for implementing a wireless sensor network (10) . The system comprises a plurality of motes (13), each mote having a sensor and a wireless co mmunication system for communicating with neighboring motes; a distributed routi ng table distributed amongst each of the plurality of motes; and an update syste m for periodically updating the distributed routing table. The method comprises broadcasting a joint command from each mote and a gather command from an endpoint.
