PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve precise background color correction without generating strip-like noise, or the like. SOLUTION: The background color correction is performed to a book image where book documents are read (step S1). Concretely, a reference value at the flat section of the book documents is obtained from the entire brightness of a read image, and the background color is corrected by the reference value. For example, a pixel value having color information is converted to hue, chroma, and brightness. A brightness profile along a direction perpendicular to the binding section of the book documents is obtained from the distribution of the brightness in an image. The brightness at the flat section is obtained from the brightness profile, and a normalization brightness profile is used where the brightness profile is normalized by using the brightness at the flat section, thus correcting the background color.
