PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an authentication system and an authentication method allowing an authentication process of a user in each application server even when an authentication server providing an environment of single sign-on does not function. SOLUTION: An authentication agent 222 requests an authentication server system 106 to issue authentication information for authenticating the user, and authenticates the user on the basis of the authentication information when obtaining the authentication information from the authentication server system 106 according to the request. A Web application part 223 provides service according to a request to a client computer 101 of the user authenticated by the authentication agent 222. When an authentication server stops, the authentication server system 106 notifies the application server 102 of stop information.
