PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glass composition for lamps which is inexpensive and superior in strength, has no fear of eroding melting furnaces, is superior in workability, and also, is little in alkali elution, and further, to provide a lamp for which the glass composition is used. SOLUTION: The glass composition contains SiO<SB>2</SB>(silicon dioxide), as a main component, and is characterised in that it contains 12-17 wt.% of Na<SB>2</SB>O (sodium oxide), 2.5-4 wt.% of MgO (magnesium oxide), 5.3-7.3 wt.% of CaO (calcium oxide), and 8-11 wt.% of MgO and CaO in total, and the lamp is characterised by being equipped with a glass bulb formed out of the above-mentioned glass composition.
