PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To cope with various input directions of manuscript images in a direction determination method and device which determine a direction of the manuscript image. SOLUTION: Image data are divided into area 1 to area 4, and the direction of each text area is determined in relation to each area, and consequently a precision of the determination of directions in a comparatively general layout, such as 2 in1, 4 in1 and so on, can be improved. The determination of directions can correspond to image data in which one to four sheets of images are recorded in one sheet of manuscript by adopting the quadrant area division.
