PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a monitoring method capable of monitoring a device using a rolling body quickly and accurately, and a monitoring device capable of miniaturization or cost reduction. SOLUTION: When the lubrication state becomes poor on a bearing 5, a sliding friction becomes partially large, and thereby rotation of a retainer 4 becomes unstable, and the maximum displacement in the radial direction of the retainer 4 becomes large. In this case, when the ratio of the difference between the maximum displacement A<SB>0</SB>of the retainer at a stable term (normal operation time) and the present maximum displacement A<SB>1</SB>of the retainer extracted by a signal processor 12 (¾A<SB>0</SB>-A<SB>1</SB>¾/A<SB>0</SB>) is over a set value (0.1) (¾A<SB>0</SB>-A<SB>1</SB>¾/A<SB>0</SB>>0.1), a control device 13 determines to be in the poor lubrication state, transmits an alarm signal to an output device 14 (an alarm unit, a monitor or the like), and allows the output device 14 to issue a warning. When the poor operation state of the bearing 5 continues, a great abnormality such as abrasion or breakage may occur, but if a measure such as replenishment of a lubricant is taken in this stage, a damage such as the abnormality can be prevented beforehand, to thereby attain abrasion prevention or lifetime elongation.
