An additive (I) for introducing homogeneously-dispersed water into polymeric materials during production and processing comprises a hydrophilic carrier material containing 30-90 wt% water, in the form of a powdery and therefore readily dispersed material. - Independent claims are also included for - (1) a method (M1) for reducing the amount of contaminants and/or odorous substances in polymeric materials by homogeneously incorporating (I) into the polymer melt and then processing the melt under reduced pressure - (2) a method (M2) for the production of foamed plastic products by adding 0.1-25 wt% (I) to a polymer melt as above and then extruding or injection molding the melt with the formation of foam.
