<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape drive which can prevent tape slack at a time of a take-up reel taking up a tape fed from a feeding reel. <P>SOLUTION: A leader tape is attached to a head end of a data tape stored in a magnetic tape cartridge 2. In carrying a tape 22 from the magnetic tape cartridge 2 to a take-up reel 12, a magnetic tape drive 1 determines whether the tape 22 carried is a leader tape attached to the head end of the data tape.
