PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem wherein uniform electrophoretic particles cannot be obtained, in the case of the conventional electrophoretic particles obtained by grafting polymer chains on surfaces of pigment particles because there are variation of particle sizes and shapes of the pigment particles serving as mother particles. SOLUTION: The electrophoretic particles with the polymer chains grafted on the surfaces of composite fine particles composed of the colorant and the polymer are such that the polymer chains are grafted by a living radical polymerization from living radical polymerization initiating groups provided on the surfaces of the fine particles.
