A 3D(three dimensional) digital record is made of a required surface grain pattern and this is projected onto a 3D record of the component which is to be produced with the grained surface. From this a 3D data record is obtained of a component with the surface grain pattern and this is then used to manufacture the grain surfaced component. A 3D record of a surface grain pattern is obtained by an optical 3D measurement of a surface of an animal skin. Such optical measurement can be achieved by strip projection, laser triangulation or photogrametry. The computer permits easy variation of the length, breadth and/or depth and/or alignment of surface structures of the 3D data relating to the grain pattern. 3D data relating to a connecting seam, e.g. a stitched or bonded seam, may be integrated into the surface grain data. Final components can be produced either by erosion or by building up the structure.
|
