<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the stability of a magnetic tape traveling speed switching operation and to reduce magnetic tape winding loads in a magnetic tape device. <P>SOLUTION: A speed switching mechanism A for switching to a high speed mode and a low speed mode is interposed in a rotation transmission route which transmits rotary drive power to a reel receiving base. The speed switching mechanism A is provided with a spring body 50 for energizing and displacing a wheel body 40 on the other side from a connecting position to a disconnecting position and a swing arm 10 for energizing and displacing the wheel body 40 on the other side from the disconnecting position to the connecting position against the energizing of the spring body 50. The swing arm 10 is provided with a pair of outer side projection pieces 12 having a first projection 14 on the tip, and an inner side projection piece 13 positioned between the outer side projection pieces 12 and provided with a pair of second projections 15 on the tip.
