PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow an automatic focusing device that exerts focus control, based on an image signal, to perform accurate, high-speed focusing operation free from wrong focusing judgement, even in a very blurred state. SOLUTION: The automatic focusing device includes an imaging means for producing an image signal from an optical image of a photographic lens; a first detecting means for detecting high-region components from the image signal and then outputting a first detection result; a second detecting means for detecting the components of a luminance difference from the image signal and then outputting a second detection result; a first information creating means for creating first information from the first detection result and the second detection result; and a control means having a differential calculating means for differentiating the information created by the first information-creating means, and used for controlling the focal point of the optical lens, based on the information created by the first information creating means and the differential calculating means.
