The system has an electronic identifier (20) associated with a transducer. A processor (28) generates a security signal in response to the identifier. The identifier has a memory (30) to store transducer identifiers. A connector (22) electronically connects the identifier with the processor, where the processor searching for the identifier within the memory. The signal corresponds to a warning and prevention of probe use. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a method for identifying unauthorized use of a transducer which is detachably connectable with an imaging device (B) a method for transducer identification (C) a method for electronically identifying transducer information.
