The distance between an object (4) and a carrier (1) is measured e.g. by a space sensor (6) or by a measuring instrument. The position of the outgoing clips (2) of a clamping grabber (15) relative to the object is determined based on the measured distance. An independent claim is also included for a lifting apparatus.
