<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet transport device, detecting the thickness of a sheet with high accuracy regardless of the thickness and material quality of a transported sheet and an image forming apparatus including the above device. <P>SOLUTION: In this sheet transport device, the leading edge of a sheet is abutted on a pair of resist rollers 25 to form a predetermined loop in the sheet, and after that, the sheet P is transported. The device includes: the paired resist rollers 25 holding the sheet P between them and transporting the same, one upper roller 25a of which can be displaced relative to the other lower roller 25b according to the thickness of the sheet; and a displacement amount detecting sensor 304 for detecting the thickness of the transported sheet from the displacement amount of the displaced upper roller 25a.
