PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical element which is improved in impact resistance. SOLUTION: Columnar structures are formed in the liquid crystal optical element by spraying spacers 105 and particles 106 of a thermoplastic resin on the alignment layer forming side of a first substrate 101A with a first electrode 102A and a first alignment layer 103A formed thereon; placing a second substrate 101B, with a second electrode 102B and a second alignment layer 103B formed thereon on the first substrate; and heating them and pressing them to each other by using a sealant.
