<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus capable of extending a brightness dynamic range and making a displayed image high in image quality. <P>SOLUTION: The image display apparatus PJ1 is provided with 1st optical modulating elements 60B, 60G and 60R for modulating the light emitted from a light source 10, and a 2nd optical modulating element 100 for modulating the light from the 1st optical modulating elements 60B, 60G and 60R, and the image display apparatus is constituted so that the light from the light source 10 may be modulated by two steps and the image may be displayed based on display image data.
