A means is provided for altering the rotary speed of the cam within one or more turns. #CMT# : #/CMT# A sorting machine (1) using shaking action comprises a sorting bed holder movably suspended from a frame and a drive mechanism for the holder comprising a driven rotary eccentric cam and a cam follower. The cam is connected to the frame and the follower is actively connected to the cam in order to move the holder up and down repeatedly with respect to the frame. The position of the holder relative to the frame depends on the rotation angle of the cam relative to the frame. A detection system is used to determine at least one rotary position of the cam and comprises a first detection device on a cam which cooperates with a stationary second detection device. The first detection device comprises at least one protruding part preferably extending in the axial direction relative to the cam and arranged in a series preferably connected by a strip secured concentrically to the cam. The second detection device is a sensor. The drive system includes a control means comprising devices for measuring movement parameters and the rotation angle of the cam and a device for maintaining the rotation of the cam. These parameters provide a value for two cam revolutions and are inputted using at least one potmeter. The rotation angle measuring device comprises a first detection means connected to the cam and aligned with a stationary second detection device. Cam revolution speed can be altered during downward movement of the holder so that the downwards acceleration of the holder is 70-100% of the acceleration due to gravity. The cam has a peripheral surface with a concentric part extending around at least 50% of the cam periphery and an eccentric part comprising a concave region in between two convex regions. The concave region smoothly overlaps the convex regions. The first detection device extends parallel to the concentric part of the peripheral surface of the cam. An electric motor is used to drive the cam. The device for maintaining the rotation of the cam comprises a frequency regulator.</p>
