PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display and the fabricating method thereof by which the capacitance of a storage capacitor can be increased, without decreasing the aperture ratio, while simplifying the process. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display includes gate lines; data lines formed across the gate lines and thereby defining pixel areas; a gate insulating film formed between the gate lines and the data lines; thin film transistors connected to the gate lines and the data lines; a semiconductor pattern defining a channel of thin film transistors and overlapped by the data lines; a protective film covering the data lines and the thin film transistors; a pixel electrode connected to the thin film transistor and formed within a pixel hole in the pixel area, the hole formed by removing from the protective film to partially through the gate insulating film; and a storage capacitor, formed by the overlapped pixel electrode and the gate line interposing the gate insulating film which is made thinner by the pixel hole.
